Imagine a video library of successful, colorful, empathic women sharing their real stories of trauma, abuse, grief, divorce, and addiction. What was it like for you? What methods did you explore to heal and what surprised you? What would you say if you had an open mic? What did you learn you wish you could pass along to other women?
I'm Victoria Montemayor, I'm 32 years old and Creative Director at victorialucia, and in November 2016 I entered into the deepest depression of my life. I realized I hadn't fully dealt with sexual, psychological, and emotional abuse from my first romantic relationship at 17... and as I started going through therapy, I realized the world and family I grew up in was also abusive and unhealthy.
I couldn't turn to my family or many of my existing friends for support, so I turned to social media. The more I shared about therapy and what I was learning - and I had to because the grief was almost unbearable - the more PM's I got from people around the world saying, "hey, I'm going through this too and I'm lost" or "I'm here for you, something similar happened to me."
Kind of like when you see an old college friend, soon we were swapping stories and connecting over something horrible, something that shouldn't have happened, and recognizing the healing that was happening in the honesty.
I was amazed by all the different modalities of healing people had explored - therapy, bioenergetics, astrologers, clairvoyants, acupuncture, psychadelics - and it was like we all were traveling in this world but didn't know others were going through it, too.
And that's how The Video Project got started. We're putting a voice and a visual to previously taboo topics partly for ourselves, and also for women lost in this isolated underworld. Healing is hard to navigate whether you're alone or in a community, and this is what we wish we had when we were going through this.
